Further Message from the GWAS Child Protection Officer.

For all Child Protection Officers everywhere.

New style CRB forms are now available direct from Anne Rook at the GNAS, but please read the guidance notes carefully!

The launch of ISA has been halted by the new government so the form will still only be for CRB checks.

Thank you

Janet Faralewski

The Grand Western Archery Society regretfully announces the death of their Regional Secretary Janet Faralewski, on Thursday the 30th of December. She peacefully passed away in the company of her son Paul and daughter Nella in Poole General Hospital.

Janet suffered from MS for over 40 years but this did not stop her supporting her son and eventually her husband Eddie on the archery field.

Being bored with just watching she took up the post of event secretary and then club secretary of the Bowmen of Lytchett, and soon got involved at both county and regional level. She converted to the “Dark Side” and became a Judge in the 70’s where her polite considerate nature soon won the respect of the archers.

Janet and Eddie became a formidable team organising competitions for their club and their county. In 1986 she became the Chairman of GWAS, and 1990 saw her in her present post as Secretary to GWAS.

In 1992 Janet and Eddie took over the running of Dunster Archery Week and continued the tradition of providing an event that archers wanted to attend.

In 1991 her MS caused her to use a buggy, JAN 1 donated by the Archers, to continue judging and get around the archery fields, where archers soon learnt to keep their bows behind the waiting line, when Jan 1’s gearbox gave up the ghost archers from across the country clubbed together to buy JAN 2.

On Eddie’s death in 1997, with the full support of her family, she continued with all her archery commitments. In the West Country she was known as the font of all knowledge who was available to be contacted both day and night on anything to do with Archery. Many archers who were visitors to the west also were influence by Janet’s love of the sport and became part of her extended family.

The Dorset and Wiltshire Archery Association, The Grand Western Archery Society, the “Archers of the West” and the “Visitors to the West” have lost an icon of honesty, fair play and organisational skills, and wish to express there sincere condolences to Paul and Gez, and to Nella and Sam, on this sad occasion.

President Grand Western Archery Society.

Message from the GWAS Council regarding the GNAS EGM

Dear Members

Your club secretaries have received a letter from GWAS (4/11/09) encouraging them as your “GNAS Electors” to go and vote, or nominate a person as your proxy, at the the forthcoming EGM on the 21st November 2009.

The letter was compiled by GWAS prior to the GNAS sending out the calling notice for the EGM and was based on information gathered from early drafts of the proposals.

Since those earlier drafts, in relation to point 5 of the GWAS letter, the GNAS Board have now identified the selection criteria for its directors (competency-based - details to be worked out later) and have decided that any person not meeting these criteria will still go forward, along with the ones that have been endorsed by the Nominations Committee as meeting the required competencies,  for the membership to vote on (for non-employed posts), or for the Board to appoint (in respect of employed posts).

This is a complex matter and I urge you and your secretaries to read the proposals sent to your club carefully and ensure that your votes are delivered to the EGM by your secretary or your nominated proxy.

The proxy form needs to be sent to the GNAS Office to arrive at least 48 hours before the AGM.

HELP WANTED

Do you know of any club members who have enjoyed attending tournaments but feel they no longer shoot to their own expected high standards or face physical problems? Show them this advertisement.

There is an alternative to shooting at tournaments.

Become a CANDIDATE JUDGE.

The Candidate will still attend the competitions without the pressures of shooting.

The Candidate will still meet their fellow archers and enjoy the day.

When club members are bemoaning their fate at the end of the day the judge will be relaxed.

A sense of humour is a help but not compulsory.

A basic knowledge of the rules of shooting will also help!

You can become a Candidate judge and ask to attend tournaments but if you decide it is not your cup of tea you are not bound to continue. A mentor/tutor will be appointed to assist you.

If you are interested, please contact. Miss Joan Griffiths. Email;  joan_griffiths @ btinternet.com

Any GWAS archers reading this message and are interested may also contact the above.
